Albert Francis Zahm’s Aërial Navigation (1911) announces itself as a “popular treatise,” yet its prose oscillates between the clipped efficiency of a patent report and the dramatic tension of a disaster narrative. The preface sets a stern editorial policy: only “substantial progress” merits attention, while “unproductive efforts of impractical zealots” are dismissed. This gatekeeping voice, however, gives way in later chapters to extended, nearly novelistic accounts of specific flights—such as the fatal 1905 accident of John J. Montgomery’s aeroplane, where Zahm reproduces a pilot’s testimony complete with dialogue (“Hurrah for Montgomery’s air ship”) and clinical detail (“a scratch from a wire on the side of his neck”).
A Gatekeeping Preface and Its Consequences
Zahm’s preface is a manifesto of selective history.
