This observation led to investigations using a phonautograph, a device that traces sound vibrations. At the Essex Institute in Salem, Massachusetts, on February 12, 1877, a short speech shouted into a telephone in Boston was heard by an audience in Salem, sixteen miles away. The speaker's tones were 'distinctly audible to an audience of 600 people,' though articulation was clear only within six feet. Bell also mentions that a report of the lecture was transmitted by word of mouth from Salem to Boston and published the next morning. He addresses a rival claim by Professor Dolbear of Tufts College, who asserted priority for the magneto-electric telephone. Bell states that Dolbear 'charges me with having obtained the idea from him through the medium of a mutual friend,' but Bell presents his own timeline of private experiments with Watson.

Collaborators and the Path to the Portable Telephone

Bell acknowledges several scientific friends in America for their cooperation, including Professor Peirce, Professor Blake, Dr. Channing, Mr. Clarke, and Mr. Jones. These gentlemen in Providence, Rhode Island, conducted experiments to perfect the apparatus and communicated each new discovery to Bell. He traces the evolution from the form shown in fig. 27 to the portable instrument of fig. 29, which placed the magnet inside the handle. The lecture concludes with a diagram of the instruments arranged on a telegraphic circuit (fig. 30).
